Course Description

This module introduces trainees to the materials, layout, planning, and installation procedures for suspended ceilings commonly used in commercial construction. Topics include exposed-grid systems, concealed systems, acoustical tiles, drywall suspension systems, integrated ceilings, and specialty panels. Emphasis is placed on safety, accurate layout, code compliance, and coordination with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. Trainees will gain practical skills through hands-on installation exercises.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common types of suspended ceiling systems (e.g., exposed-grid, concealed, luminous, integrated, and pan-type).

  • Read blueprints and MEP drawings to plan ceiling layouts and account for penetrations (e.g., lighting, HVAC, sprinklers).
  • Perform accurate layout calculations for grid systems, including border tiles and equal spacing.
  • Safely install wall molding, main runners, cross tees, and suspension components.
  • Install ceiling tiles/panels, including cutting for borders and fixtures.
  • Recognize and address special considerations, such as fire-rated assemblies, seismic requirements, and acoustical performance.
  • Complete performance tasks demonstrating proper installation techniques.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of NCCER Core Curriculum (safety, tools, math, drawings)
  • Recommended: NCCER Carpentry Level 1 or equivalent experience in basic construction
