27204 Exterior Finishing

Course Syllabus: NCCER Module 27204-13 Exterior Finishing

Course Information

  • Course Title: Exterior Finishing
  • Module ID: 27204-13 (from NCCER Carpentry Level Two)
  • Duration: 35 hours (typically 20–25 hours classroom/theory + 10–15 hours lab/practical)
  • Credits: Varies by institution (often 2–3 credits; competency-based per NCCER standards)
  • Prerequisites: Successful completion of NCCER Core Curriculum and Carpentry Level One (or equivalent experience and instructor approval)

Course Description

This module introduces trainees to the materials and methods used in exterior finishing for residential and light commercial construction. It covers the selection, installation, and weatherproofing techniques for exterior cladding systems, trim, cornices, gutters, and related components. Emphasis is on safety, code compliance, moisture control, and proper installation to protect the structure from the elements. Trainees will learn to install common exterior finishes including wood, vinyl, metal, fiber-cement, and stucco siding, as well as cornices, gutters/downspouts, and window/door trim.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose of wall insulation, flashing, building wrap, and other moisture barriers.
  2. Identify and install selected types of building wrap and flashing.
  3. Describe and install common cornice designs and overhang components (e.g., fascia, soffits).
  4. Identify various exterior siding materials (wood, vinyl, metal, fiber-cement, stucco, EIFS) and their applications.
  5. Install selected types of siding, ensuring proper alignment, sealing, and ventilation.
  6. Install gutters, downspouts, and related drainage components.
  7. Install exterior window and door trim, including flashing integration.
  8. Apply safe practices when working with ladders, scaffolding, sheet materials, and power tools in exterior environments.
  9. Estimate materials for basic exterior finishing tasks.

Required Materials

  • Textbook: NCCER Carpentry Level Two Trainee Guide (latest edition, containing Module 27204-13)
  • Additional Resources: NCCER Performance Profile Sheets, module review questions, and flashcards (optional digital access via NCCERconnect)
  • Tools and PPE (provided in lab or required by trainee):
    • Personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection)
    • Hand tools: hammer, utility knife, chalk line, level, tape measure, tin snips
    • Power tools: circular saw, pneumatic nailer, caulk gun
    • Ladders/extension ladders, scaffolding (as needed)
    • Materials for hands-on practice: building wrap, flashing, siding samples, gutters, trim stock

  3. Cornices and Roof Overhangs (5 hours)
    • Types of cornices (open, closed, boxed)
    • Installation of fascia, soffits, frieze boards, and vents
    • Integration with roofing and siding
  4. Exterior Siding (12 hours)

  7. Review, Estimating, and Troubleshooting (2 hours)
    • Material takeoffs and waste factors
    • Common installation errors and remedies
    • Module review and exam preparation

Instructional Methods

  • Classroom lectures and discussions
  • Multimedia presentations (NCCER PowerPoints)
  • Hands-on lab demonstrations and practice
  • Group activities and problem-solving

Assessment and Evaluation

NCCER modules are competency-based. Trainees must demonstrate mastery of both knowledge and skills:

  • Written Exam: Closed-book, multiple-choice (minimum passing score: 70–75%, per NCCER guidelines)
  • Performance Verification: Hands-on tasks evaluated using NCCER Performance Profile Sheets. Trainees must successfully complete required performance tasks (e.g., install siding section, install gutter segment, install trim around opening)
  • Attendance and Participation: Required for lab sessions; makeup for missed practicals may be arranged
  • Grading: Pass/Fail (successful completion earns NCCER credential entry upon full level certification)

Policies

  • Safety: Zero tolerance for violations; unsafe practices result in removal from lab
  • Attendance: Consistent attendance required; excessive absences may prevent module completion
  • Academic Integrity: Cheating on exams results in failure
  • Accommodations: Available for qualified students per institutional policy

This syllabus aligns with NCCER’s standardized curriculum for Module 27204-13 Exterior Finishing. Upon completion, trainees are prepared for entry-level work in exterior carpentry and progress toward full Carpentry Level Two certification. Contact the instructor for any questions.
