26105 – Introduction to the National Electrical Code

NCCER Introduction to the National Electrical Code® Module 26105-23 (7.5 Hours)

Craft Instructor: Donald Callaway

Required Textbook/Materials Electrical Level 1, 11th Edition, NCCER (Pearson). Published: July 14, 2023. Trainee Guide ISBN: 978-0-13-793486-7 Module-specific resources (including 26105-23): ISBN 978-0-13-817458-3 NCCERconnect access card or bundle (recommended for digital delivery; includes Pearson eText, interactive NEC navigation tools, videos, quizzes, and gradebook).

Preferred Curriculum Delivery Incorporate NCCERconnect as the preferred curriculum delivery blended with Instructor-led presentations. NCCERconnect serves as the primary online platform for self-paced interactive content, eText reading, NEC lookup simulations, multimedia resources, assessments, and progress tracking. This is blended with instructor-led presentations, classroom discussions, group code-lookup exercises, and practical navigation activities delivered by Craft Instructor Donald Callaway for enhanced engagement and real-world application.

Course Description This module introduces the National Electrical Code® (NEC®) and explains how to use it to find installation requirements. Trainees learn the purpose, history, structure, and organization of the NEC®, how to navigate it efficiently, mandatory versus permissive rules, key definitions, and an overview of related organizations such as NEMA and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs).

Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose, history, scope, and legal application of the National Electrical Code®.
  2. Describe how the NEC® is organized (chapters, articles, parts, sections, tables, and annexes).
  3. Demonstrate how to navigate the NEC® using the Table of Contents, Index, and cross-references.
  4. Distinguish between mandatory rules, permissive rules, exceptions, and informational notes.
  5. Locate and apply key definitions in Article 100 and general requirements in Chapter 1.
  6. Discuss the roles of NEMA and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) and product listings.
  7. Explain code adoption, enforcement by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), and local amendments.

Alignment with Kansas Educational Standards Yes. This NCCER module fully aligns with Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards in the Architecture & Construction career cluster, specifically supporting the Construction & Design pathway and Electrical Technology programs (course code 17113). NCCER curricula and credentials (including Core + Electrical Level 1) are recognized in the KSDE CTE Resource Guide as approved industry-validated content and portable credentials for secondary/postsecondary programs, articulation, Perkins funding, and career readiness in Kansas construction trades.

Assessments & Evaluation

  • NCCER module written examination (administered via NCCERconnect; minimum 70% passing score for credentialing).
  • Ongoing quizzes, review questions, and practical performance tasks (NEC navigation and lookup exercises).
  • Successful completion contributes to NCCER Electrical Level 1 credential and KS CTE pathway recognition.

Prerequisites Recommended: Modules 26101 (Occupational Overview: The Electrical Industry), 26102 (Safety for Electricians), 26103 (Introduction to Electrical Circuits), and 26104 (Electrical Theory).

Policies Full attendance and active participation required, especially during hands-on NEC navigation exercises. Students encouraged to bring a current copy of the NEC® (2023 edition preferred) for class practice. Digital devices encouraged for NCCERconnect access. Professionalism, accuracy, and safety emphasized throughout.
