Course Description This module provides an overview of the electrical craft and discusses the career paths available to electricians. It covers the different sectors of the industry (residential, commercial, and industrial), apprenticeship requirements, licensing and certification processes, professional organizations, employee/employer responsibilities, and basic components found in electrical systems.

Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Describe the scope and importance of the electrical industry in modern society.
  2. Identify career opportunities and work environments in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
  3. Explain apprenticeship programs, including U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) requirements (approximately 8,000 on-the-job learning hours plus classroom instruction).
  4. Discuss licensing, certifications, progression from apprentice to journeyman to master electrician, and key professional organizations (IBEW, NECA, NFPA, etc.).
  5. Identify typical components and installation stages (rough-in, trim-out) in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems.
  6. Describe the personal characteristics, skills, ethics, and professional responsibilities required of a successful electrician.
