Course Syllabus: NCCER Module 22304 – Excavators
Course Information
- Course Title: Excavators
- Module ID: 22304 (Heavy Equipment Operations Curriculum)
- Edition: Current version (e.g., 22304-14 or later, as referenced in NCCER materials)
- Training Hours: 35 hours (includes classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and review)
- Level: Heavy Equipment Operations Level 2/3
- Delivery Format: Blended (classroom theory, lab simulations, and practical field operations)
- Certification: Successful completion contributes toward NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations credentials (e.g., Excavator Operator interim credential) and prepares trainees for the NCCER module assessment.
Course Description
This module introduces trainees to the safe and effective operation of excavators used in construction, mining, and earthmoving applications. Trainees will identify and describe common types, uses, and components of excavators. The course emphasizes safety guidelines, prestart inspection procedures, preventive maintenance requirements, and basic operational techniques. Hands-on practice is included to develop foundational skills in excavator operation.
Prerequisites
- Completion of NCCER Core Curriculum (Basic Safety, Introduction to Construction Math, etc.)
- Completion of Heavy Equipment Operations Level 1 (or equivalent experience)
- Recommended: Modules covering basic heavy equipment introduction, soils, grades, and excavation math (e.g., 22103, 22207, 22308)
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate machinery (instructor approval required for hands-on portions)
- Physical ability to operate heavy equipment safely
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:
- Identify and describe common types of excavators (e.g., crawler-mounted, wheeled, mini-excavators, telescoping boom) and their primary uses in construction and earthmoving.
- Identify and explain the major components and systems of excavators (e.g., boom, arm/stick, bucket, undercarriage, tracks/wheels, hydraulic systems, cab controls).
- Apply safety guidelines and regulations specific to excavator operation, including personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard recognition, and safe work zones.
- Perform prestart walkthrough inspections and startup procedures.
- Conduct basic preventive maintenance tasks, including lubrication, fluid checks, and track/tire maintenance.
- Demonstrate fundamental operational techniques, such as positioning, trenching, loading, and basic digging in a controlled environment.
- Recognize and respond to common operational hazards and emergency shutdown procedures.
Performance Tasks (as per NCCER standards; assessed under instructor supervision):
- Perform a complete prestart inspection on an excavator.
- Identify key components on an actual excavator.
- Safely start up, maneuver, and shut down an excavator.
- Perform basic excavating tasks (e.g., digging a test trench).
