Module ID: 22303 Duration: 30 Hours Format: Combination of classroom instruction, discussion, and hands-on practical exercises Prerequisites: Completion of NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations Level 1 (or equivalent experience), including basic safety, operational techniques, and orientation to heavy equipment.
Course Description
This module introduces trainees to the safe and effective operation of backhoes. It covers the identification and description of common uses, types, components, instruments, controls, and attachments of backhoes. Emphasis is placed on safety guidelines, prestart inspection procedures, preventive maintenance requirements, basic startup and shutdown, and fundamental operational techniques. Trainees will learn common work activities associated with backhoes, including digging, trenching, grading, and loading.

- Describe major components, instruments, controls, and attachments.
- Apply safety guidelines specific to backhoe operations.

Course Outline
1. Introduction to Backhoes (4 Hours)
- Common applications and uses in construction
- Types of backhoes (e.g., tractor-loader-backhoes)
- Overview of capabilities and limitations
2. Safety Guidelines (4 Hours)
- Operator responsibilities and hazard recognition
- Site hazards, underground utilities, and overhead obstacles
- Safe mounting/dismounting and stabilization
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
3. Components, Controls, and Attachments (6 Hours)
- Major components and terminology (boom, dipper, bucket, stabilizers, etc.)
- Instruments, gauges, and warning systems
- Operator station layout and controls
- Common attachments and their uses


4. Prestart Inspections and Preventive Maintenance (4 Hours)
- Daily walk-around inspection procedures
- Fluid levels, leaks, and lubrication points
- Track/wheel condition and structural checks
- Basic preventive maintenance tasks
5. Basic Startup, Operation, and Shutdown (6 Hours)
- Safe startup and warmup procedures
- Positioning and stabilizing the machine
- Basic travel and maneuvering
- Shutdown and securing the machine
6. Common Work Activities (6 Hours)
- Digging and excavating techniques
- Trenching to specified depth and grade
- Grading slopes and leveling
- Loading trucks and backfilling
- Practical exercises with supervision


Assessment Methods
- Written Exam: Multiple-choice questions covering module content (minimum passing score: 70%).
- Performance Verification: Hands-on evaluation of key tasks, including:
- Conducting a complete prestart inspection
- Starting, maneuvering, and shutting down the backhoe
- Digging a level trench or performing basic excavation
- Demonstrating safe operational techniques
- Performance tasks are pass/fail and must be verified by an NCCER-certified instructor.

- NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations Level 2 Trainee Guide (includes Module 22303)
- Access to a functional backhoe loader for hands-on training
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing, steel-toed boots
- Notebook and writing materials
Certification
Successful completion of this module (passing written exam and performance tasks) contributes toward NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations Level 2 certification and entry into the NCCER National Registry.
Note on Safety
Safety is integrated throughout the course. All hands-on activities require strict adherence to OSHA guidelines and NCCER safety standards. No trainee may operate equipment without direct supervision until competency is demonstrated.
