NCCER Module 22212: Skid Steers

Course Information

  • Module ID: 22212 (Heavy Equipment Operations Level 2)
  • Course Title: Skid Steers
  • Training Hours: 22.5 hours (including classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and performance testing)
  • Prerequisites: Successful completion of NCCER Core Curriculum and Heavy Equipment Operations Level 1 (or equivalent experience and instructor approval)
  • Credential: Successful completion contributes toward NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations Level 2 certification and the Skid Steer Operator interim credential

Course Description

This module provides comprehensive training on the safe and effective operation of skid steer loaders. Trainees learn the versatile uses of skid steers, available attachments, safety protocols, component identification, inspection procedures, controls, basic and intermediate operating techniques, and preventive maintenance. Emphasis is placed on practical skills to prepare trainees for real-world job site applications in construction, landscaping, and material handling.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  • Describe the common uses of skid steers and the types of attachments available.
  • Identify and explain key safety practices specific to skid steer operation.
  • Identify major chassis components, controls, instrumentation, and common attachments.
  • Perform pre-operation inspections, startup, and shutdown procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe and efficient basic operation of a skid steer, including travel, lifting, and material handling.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Recognize and respond to common operational hazards.

Course Outline

1.0 Introduction to Skid Steers (2 hours)

  • Overview of skid steer applications in construction and related industries
  • Types of skid steers (wheeled and tracked)
  • Advantages and limitations compared to other equipment

2.0 Safety Practices (4 hours)

  • General heavy equipment safety review
  • Skid steer-specific hazards (tip-overs, pinch points, attachments, visibility)
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Safe entry/exit, seat belt and restraint use
  • Job site awareness, including bystander and spotter communication
  • OSHA and manufacturer safety guidelines

3.0 Components and Attachments (4 hours)

  • Chassis and undercarriage components
  • Engine, hydraulic systems, and drive mechanisms
  • Controls and instrumentation panels
  • Common attachments (buckets, forks, augers, grapples, brushes, etc.)
  • Attachment installation and removal procedures

4.0 Pre-Operation and Maintenance (3 hours)

  • Walk-around inspection procedures
  • Fluid checks, track/wheel condition, and attachment security
  • Daily preventive maintenance tasks
  • Reference to operator’s manual for machine-specific requirements
  • Startup and shutdown sequences

5.0 Basic Controls and Operation (6 hours)

  • Familiarization with controls (joysticks, pedals, auxiliary hydraulics)
  • Basic maneuvers: forward/reverse travel, turning, counter-rotation
  • Lifting, lowering, and tilting operations
  • Safe load handling and stability principles (center of gravity, rated operating capacity)

6.0 Work Activities and Practical Application (3 hours)

  • Basic tasks: digging, backfilling, grading, loading
  • Operating with common attachments
  • Site navigation and obstacle avoidance

7.0 Review and Performance Testing (0.5 hours)

  • Module review
  • Written examination preparation

Performance Tasks

Trainees must demonstrate proficiency under instructor supervision. These tasks align with NCCER standards and are required for module completion:

  1. Perform a complete pre-start walk-around inspection and daily maintenance on a skid steer.
  2. Safely start up, operate basic controls, and shut down a skid steer.
  3. Demonstrate safe travel and maneuvering in forward and reverse, including turns and counter-rotation.
  4. Perform basic work activities, such as lifting, carrying, and placing loads without exceeding rated capacity.
  5. (If equipment available) Safely install/remove at least one attachment and operate it.

Assessment Methods

  • Written Examination: Multiple-choice test covering module objectives (minimum passing score: 70%)
  • Performance Testing: Hands-on evaluation of required tasks (must complete all tasks safely and correctly)
  • Attendance and Participation: Full attendance required; active participation in discussions and practice sessions

Required Materials

  • NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations Level 2 trainee guide (Skid Steers module)
  • Manufacturer’s operator manual for the specific skid steer model(s) used
  • Personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, high-visibility vest)
  • Access to a skid steer loader (wheeled or tracked) and common attachments
  • Notebook and pen for notes

Instructor Notes

  • Training must be conducted by an NCCER-certified instructor.
  • Hands-on practice should occur in a controlled environment with adequate space and barriers.
  • Adapt content to specific machine models available.
  • Emphasize safety throughout; stop any unsafe operation immediately.
