Trainees should have basic understanding of construction site hazards.

Course Description

This module provides an introduction to basic rigging practices on construction sites. It covers the identification, inspection, and safe use of common rigging equipment, including slings, hardware, hitches, and hoists. Emphasis is placed on safe working habits, proper inspection techniques, rejection criteria for damaged equipment, and basic hand signals. The module prepares trainees for safe material handling and supports progression toward advanced rigging certifications.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe various types of slings (synthetic, alloy steel chain, wire rope) and common rigging hardware.
  2. Perform basic inspection techniques for slings and hardware, including identifying rejection criteria and removal-from-service conditions.
  3. Describe and demonstrate the three basic hitches: vertical, choker, and basket.
  4. Identify basic rigging practices, including the use of hoists and safe load-handling techniques.
  5. Recognize and demonstrate the ASME Emergency Stop hand signal.
  6. Explain safe working habits in the vicinity of rigging operations.

Course Outline and Schedule

Session 1: Introduction and Slings (5 hours)

  • Overview of rigging operations and safety importance
  • Tagging and identification requirements for slings
  • Types of slings:
    • Synthetic slings (web, round)
    • Alloy steel chain slings

  • Inspection techniques and rejection criteria
  • Laboratory: Hands-on inspection of various slings; identify damage and report load capacity

Session 2: Rigging Hitches (4 hours)

  • Basic hitch configurations

  • Load control and tag lines
  • Laboratory: Demonstrate proper application of hitches using sample loads

Session 3: Rigging Hardware, Hoists, and Practices (4 hours)

  • Common rigging hardware (shackles, hooks, clamps, eye bolts, etc.)
  • Types of hoists and basic rigging equipment
  • Safe load-handling practices
  • Environmental factors (temperature limits, etc.)
  • Laboratory: Identify and inspect hardware; safe use demonstration

Session 4: Hand Signals and Review (2 hours)

  • ASME standard hand signals with focus on Emergency Stop
  • Safe habits around rigging operations
  • Module review and Q&A
  • Performance testing

    • Demonstrate the ASME Emergency Stop hand signal
    • Inspect a sling for damage and determine if it should be removed from service
    • Identify and report the rated capacity of a sling
    • Properly apply basic hitches (as applicable)
  • Completion: Successful trainees earn NCCER credential for Module 00106, recorded in the National Registry
