Course Description

This module introduces trainees to common hand tools used across various construction crafts. Trainees will learn to identify, select, inspect, safely use, and maintain a wide range of hand tools. Emphasis is placed on tool safety, proper application, and visual inspection to ensure tools are in safe working condition. The module covers striking, driving, cutting, layout, measuring, and other specialty tools commonly found on construction sites.

A quality hand tool investment lasts for years when properly used and maintained. This course prepares entry-level craftworkers to work safely and efficiently with essential hand tools.

2. Hammers and Striking Tools (2 Hours)
   • Types: Claw hammer, ball-peen hammer, sledgehammer, machinist’s hammer
   • Proper gripping, swinging, and striking techniques
   • Applications and safety considerations
3. Screwdrivers and Fastening Tools (1.5 Hours)
   • Types: Slotted, Phillips, Torx, Robertson, offset
   • Proper selection based on fastener type
   • Techniques for driving and removing screws
4. Pliers, Wrenches, and Clamping Tools (1.5 Hours)
   • Types: Slip-joint pliers, adjustable wrenches, pipe wrenches, locking pliers, clamps
   • Uses for gripping, twisting, and holding
   • Adjustable wrench and pipe wrench differences
5. Layout and Measuring Tools (1.5 Hours)

3. Make a straight, square cut in framing lumber using a handsaw.
4. Demonstrate proper use of selected tools (e.g., screwdriver, pliers, level, chisel).
