Course Description

This module introduces the identification, selection, and installation of commercial and residential doors and related hardware. It emphasizes the proper installation of metal doors and hardware in steel-framed, wood-framed, and masonry walls, as well as wood doors, folding doors, and pocket doors. Topics include door types, frames, hardware components (e.g., locksets, hinges, closers, and panic devices), installation procedures, and relevant safety and building code requirements.

Prerequisites

  • Successful completion of NCCER Carpentry Level 1 (or equivalent experience)
  • Basic knowledge of construction safety, tools, and framing

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Identify common types of doors (hollow-core, solid-core, flush, panel, metal, fire-rated) and explain their applications.
  2. Recognize and describe various door frames and jambs (knock-down, welded, wood, metal).
  3. Demonstrate proper installation of door frames in steel-framed, wood-framed, and masonry walls.
  4. Install metal and wood doors, including prehung units.
  5. Identify and install standard door hardware, including hinges, locksets (cylindrical and mortise), door closers, panic hardware, kick plates, and thresholds.
  6. Install specialty doors, such as bifold, pocket, and sliding doors.
  7. Apply safety practices and comply with relevant building codes, including fire-rated assembly requirements.

Performance Tasks (Hands-On Assessment)

Trainees must demonstrate proficiency under instructor supervision in the following (as outlined in NCCER standards):

  1. Install a metal door frame in a prepared opening (steel, wood, or masonry wall).
  2. Hang and align a prehung or slab door.
  3. Install selected door hardware (e.g., lockset, hinges, closer).
  4. Install a specialty door (e.g., bifold or pocket door).

Course Outline and Schedule

Total: 25 Hours (Suggested breakdown over 5 sessions of 5 hours each)

  • Session 1 (5 Hours): Introduction and Door Types
    • Safety review and module overview
    • Types of doors (hollow-core vs. solid-core, flush vs. panel, metal vs. wood, fire-rated)
    • Door schedules and specifications
    • Lab: Identify door samples
  • Session 2 (5 Hours): Door Frames and Jambs
    • Types of frames (knock-down, welded, wood jambs)
    • Frame components (head jamb, side jambs, stops, casings)
    • Preparation of rough openings
    • Lab: Assemble and shim a door frame
  • Session 3 (6 Hours): Installing Doors and Frames
    • Installation in steel-framed, wood-framed, and masonry walls
    • Shimming, plumbing, and anchoring techniques
    • Hanging slab and prehung doors
    • Lab: Install metal door and frame in mock wall
  • Session 4 (5 Hours): Door Hardware
    • Hardware types (butt hinges, continuous hinges, cylindrical/mortise locksets, panic hardware, closers, weatherstripping)
    • Function, selection, and code requirements
    • Installation procedures
    • Lab: Install lockset, hinges, and closer
  • Session 5 (4 Hours): Specialty Doors and Review
    • Bifold, pocket, and sliding door installation
    • Troubleshooting common issues (binding, alignment)
    • Final performance tasks and review
    • Module exam preparation

Required Materials

  • NCCER Carpentry Level 2 Trainee Guide (current edition)
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE): safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, work boots
  • Basic hand tools (provided or personal): hammer, screwdriver set, level, tape measure, shims
  • Lab materials (provided): door frames, doors, hardware kits, mock walls

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Written Exam: Multiple-choice and short-answer (70% passing required; covers theory and identification)
  • Performance Testing: Graded on accuracy, safety, and craftsmanship during hands-on tasks (must complete all performance tasks to NCCER standards)
  • Attendance and Participation: Active involvement in labs and discussions
  • Certification: Successful completion earns NCCER credential for Module 27208 (entered into NCCER National Registry)

Grading Policy

  • Written Exam: 40%
  • Performance Tasks: 50%
  • Participation/Safety: 10%
  • Passing Grade: 70% overall, with all performance tasks completed satisfactorily
