22209 Interpreting Civil Drawings
Course Syllabus: Interpreting Civil Drawings
NCCER Module ID 22209
Course Code: NCCER 22209 Credit Hours: Non-credit (Certification Module) Total Hours: 20 Hours Delivery Format: Classroom instruction, hands-on practice with drawings, and performance testing Prerequisites: Completion of NCCER Core Curriculum (or equivalent basic construction skills) and basic mathematics proficiency. Familiarity with introductory construction drawings recommended. Required Materials:
- NCCER Trainee Guide: Interpreting Civil Drawings (Module 22209)
- NCCER Performance Profile Sheets
- Civil drawing sets (site plans, roadway plans, profiles, and cross-sections provided by instructor)
- Calculator, scale ruler, and drafting tools
Course Description
This 20-hour module trains participants to read and interpret civil drawings used in heavy equipment operations, heavy highway construction, and building site development. Trainees learn to identify drawing types, understand symbols and scales, interpret contour lines and grades, and calculate cut and fill requirements for earthwork. The course emphasizes practical application in interpreting roadway drawings (plan and profile sheets) and building site plans, including as-built drawings.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:
- Identify and describe common types of civil drawings, including site plans, grading plans, utility plans, plan and profile sheets, and as-built drawings for highway and building site construction.
- Recognize and interpret standard symbols, abbreviations, lines, scales, and dimensions on civil drawings.
- Read and interpret contour lines to determine existing and proposed elevations and grades.
- Calculate cut and fill volumes using site plans and cross-sections.
- Interpret roadway drawings, including plan views, profile views, and cross-sections.
- Understand the role of as-built drawings in project closeout and verification.
- Demonstrate proficiency through performance tasks and a written examination.
Course Schedule (20 Hours Total)
The course is typically delivered over 4–5 sessions (e.g., two full days or one week part-time).
| Session | Topics Covered | Hours | Activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Introduction to Civil Drawings • Overview of drawing types (highway vs. building site) • Drawing components: title blocks, revision blocks, legends, scales • Symbols, abbreviations, and line types (e.g., break lines, contour lines) | 4 | Lecture, review sample drawings, group discussion |
| 2 | Site Plans and Contour Lines • Reading plot plans, grading plans, and utility plans • Existing vs. proposed contours • Determining elevations and slopes | 5 | Hands-on exercises with contour maps, elevation calculations |
| 3 | Earthwork Calculations • Cut and fill concepts • Volume calculations using grid methods and cross-sections • Balancing cut and fill on site plans | 5 | Practice problems, calculator exercises, drawing interpretation |
| 4 | Roadway and Specialized Drawings • Plan and profile sheets • Cross-sections for highways • Interpreting drainage, paving, and alignment details • As-built drawings and their uses | 4 | Review roadway drawing sets, identify features |
| 5 | Review and Assessment • Comprehensive review • Performance testing • Module examination | 2 | Performance tasks, written exam |
Assessment and Certification
- Performance Tasks (70% of grade): Trainees must complete hands-on performance profiles, including interpreting provided drawings, calculating cut/fill volumes, and identifying features on site and roadway plans. Tasks are evaluated per NCCER standards (pass/fail).
- Written Examination (30% of grade): Multiple-choice exam covering module content (minimum 70% to pass).
- Completion Requirements: 100% attendance, successful performance tasks, and passing exam.
- Certification: Successful completers earn the NCCER Interpreting Civil Drawings (22209) credential, recorded in the NCCER National Registry.
Grading Policy
- Pass/Fail based on NCCER standards.
- Retesting available for failed components per training center policy.
