NCCER Module 22105: Utility Tractors

Course Syllabus

Course Information

  • Module ID: 22105
  • Title: Utility Tractors
  • Program: Heavy Equipment Operations (Level 1)
  • Training Hours: 17.5 hours (includes classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and performance testing)
  • Format: Blended (classroom theory, demonstrations, and practical exercises)

Course Description

This module introduces the safe and effective operation of general utility tractors commonly used in the construction industry. Trainees learn operator duties and responsibilities, safety protocols, component identification, pre- and post-operation procedures, basic maneuvering, implement attachment, and preventive maintenance practices. Emphasis is placed on safe operation to prevent accidents and equipment damage.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of NCCER Core: Introduction to Basic Construction Skills
  • Heavy Equipment Safety (Module ID 00102 or equivalent)
  • Identification of Heavy Equipment
  • Basic Operational Techniques

Trainees must possess basic reading, writing, and math skills, and be physically capable of operating heavy equipment.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Describe the role, duties, and responsibilities of a utility tractor operator.
  2. Identify major components, systems, and controls of utility tractors and explain their functions.
  3. Recognize and apply safety rules, including hazard awareness and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  4. Perform pre-operation inspections, basic preventive maintenance, and post-operation checks.
  5. Safely start, maneuver, steer, stop, and shut down a utility tractor.
  6. Attach, detach, and safely operate common implements (e.g., three-point hitch attachments).
  7. Identify common operational hazards and demonstrate safe practices during tractor operation.

Performance Tasks

Under the supervision of an NCCER-certified instructor, trainees must demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Performing a complete pre-operation inspection.
  • Safely starting, operating (including basic maneuvers), and shutting down the tractor.
  • Attaching and detaching at least one implement using the three-point hitch or other systems.
  • Performing basic operational tasks, such as traveling with and without an implement.
  • Completing post-operation checks and basic maintenance tasks.
