Course Description

This module prepares trainees for successful employment in the construction industry. It emphasizes skills beyond basic job applications, including finding and securing jobs, maintaining employment, advancing careers, critical thinking, problem-solving, effective communication, interpersonal relationships, and awareness of workplace issues such as diversity, harassment, and substance abuse.

Trainees learn opportunities in construction trades and develop professional behaviors for long-term success.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, trainees will be able to:

  1. Describe opportunities in the construction workforce and the role of employees in the industry.
  2. Explain the importance of critical thinking and demonstrate problem-solving skills in workplace scenarios.
  3. Identify basic computer systems and their applications in construction (e.g., email, project management software).
  4. Define and apply effective relationship skills, including communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and professional self-presentation.
  5. Recognize and respond appropriately to workplace issues, including sexual harassment, stress management, substance abuse, and diversity.

Course Outline

Session 1: Opportunities and Preparation for Employment (2.5 hours)

  • Researching potential employers
  • Preparing resumes, applications, and cover letters
  • Interview skills and professional self-presentation (dress, speech, behavior)
  • Pre-employment requirements (e.g., drug testing)

Session 2: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Technology (2 hours)

  • Defining critical thinking and its role in construction
  • Steps in problem-solving processes
  • Applying critical thinking to workplace scenarios
  • Basic computer literacy: hardware, software, and internet use
  • Electronic communication in the workplace (email, texting, project apps)
