Course Description

This module introduces trainees to common hand tools used across various construction crafts. Trainees will learn to identify, select, inspect, safely use, and maintain a wide range of hand tools. Emphasis is placed on tool safety, proper application, and visual inspection to ensure tools are in safe working condition. The module covers striking, driving, cutting, layout, measuring, and other specialty tools commonly found on construction sites.

A quality hand tool investment lasts for years when properly used and maintained. This course prepares entry-level craftworkers to work safely and efficiently with essential hand tools.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Identify common hand tools and describe their intended uses in construction trades.
  2. Visually inspect hand tools to determine if they are safe for use.
  3. Demonstrate safe and proper use of various hand tools.
  4. Explain maintenance and storage practices to extend tool life.
  5. Perform basic tasks using hand tools, such as making straight cuts and driving fasteners.

Course Outline

The module is divided into the following sessions/topics:

  1. Introduction to Hand Tools and Safety (1.5 Hours)
    • Importance of hand tools in construction
    • General safety rules for hand tool use
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
    • Visual inspection for damage (e.g., mushroomed heads, cracks, worn jaws)
  2. Hammers and Striking Tools (2 Hours)
    • Types: Claw hammer, ball-peen hammer, sledgehammer, machinist’s hammer
    • Proper gripping, swinging, and striking techniques
    • Applications and safety considerations
  3. Screwdrivers and Fastening Tools (1.5 Hours)
    • Types: Slotted, Phillips, Torx, Robertson, offset
    • Proper selection based on fastener type
    • Techniques for driving and removing screws
  4. Pliers, Wrenches, and Clamping Tools (1.5 Hours)
    • Types: Slip-joint pliers, adjustable wrenches, pipe wrenches, locking pliers, clamps
    • Uses for gripping, twisting, and holding
    • Adjustable wrench and pipe wrench differences
  5. Layout and Measuring Tools (1.5 Hours)
    • Tape measures, rulers, squares, levels (spirit, laser, torpedo)
    • Proper reading and use for accurate measurements and layout
    • Plumb and level checks
  6. Cutting and Shaping Tools (1.5 Hours)
    • Handsaws (crosscut, rip, hacksaw), chisels, planes, files, utility knives
    • Techniques for straight and square cuts
    • Sharpening and maintenance

Performance Tasks

Trainees must demonstrate proficiency in the following (evaluated by NCCER-certified instructor):

  1. Visually inspect hand tools and identify any that are unsafe for use.
  2. Safely and properly use a hammer or demolition tool.
  3. Make a straight, square cut in framing lumber using a handsaw.
  4. Demonstrate proper use of selected tools (e.g., screwdriver, pliers, level, chisel).
