Course Description

This module introduces trainees to the hand tools and power tools commonly used in carpentry. Emphasis is placed on tool identification, safe operation, proper use, visual inspection for defects, and basic maintenance procedures. Trainees will learn to select the appropriate tool for specific tasks while prioritizing safety to prevent injuries. The module aligns with NCCER’s competency-based training standards and prepares trainees for real-world application in residential and commercial carpentry.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, trainees will be able to:

  1. Identify common hand tools used by carpenters and describe their uses and applications.
  2. Demonstrate safe and proper use of selected hand tools.
  3. Identify common portable and stationary power tools used by carpenters and describe their uses and applications.
  4. Demonstrate safe and proper use of selected power tools.
  5. Visually inspect hand and power tools to determine if they are safe for use.
  6. Describe and perform basic maintenance procedures for hand and power tools.
  7. Explain general safety precautions, including personal protective equipment (PPE), when working with tools.

Content Outline

Session 1: Introduction and Hand Tool Safety (2.5 Hours)

  • Overview of tool safety principles and OSHA regulations
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Common hazards associated with hand tools
  • Visual inspection and reporting defective tools

Session 2: Hand Tools Identification and Use (3.5 Hours)

  • Measuring and layout tools (e.g., tape measures, levels — spirit, laser, water; squares — framing, combination, try)
  • Cutting and shaping tools (e.g., hand saws — crosscut, rip, keyhole/coping; chisels; planes; utility knives)
  • Fastening and striking tools (e.g., hammers — claw, framing; nail sets; screwdrivers)
  • Clamping and holding tools (e.g., bar clamps, C-clamps, spring clamps)
  • Hands-on practice and demonstration

Session 3: Power Tools Identification and Safety (2 Hours)

  • General power tool safety (guards, grounding, cords, triggers)
  • Portable power tools (e.g., circular saws, reciprocating saws, drills/drivers, routers, sanders, jig saws)
  • Pneumatic tools (e.g., nailers, staplers)
  • Stationary power tools (introduction only, e.g., table saws, miter saws, drill presses)

Session 4: Power Tool Use, Inspection, and Maintenance (2 Hours)

  • Safe operation demonstrations
  • Tool inspection checklists
  • Basic maintenance (cleaning, sharpening, lubrication, storage)
  • Review and performance testing

Required Materials

  • Textbook: NCCER Carpentry Level One trainee guide (current edition containing Module 27103)
  • Tools and Equipment (provided in lab):
    • Assorted hand tools (hammers, saws, levels, squares, clamps, etc.)
    • Portable power tools (circular saw, drill, reciprocating saw, etc.)
    • PPE (safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, dust masks)
  • Other: Notebook, pencil, calculator

Safety Requirements

  • All trainees must wear appropriate PPE at all times in the lab.
  • No loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair that could become entangled in tools.
  • Strict adherence to instructor supervision during hands-on activities.
  • Immediate reporting of any damaged tools or unsafe conditions.

Assessment Methods

  • Written Examination: Multiple-choice test covering tool identification, safety, uses, and maintenance (70% passing score required for NCCER registry credit).
  • Performance Testing: Trainees must demonstrate safe and proper use of at least 5–7 specified hand and power tools (e.g., hammer, handsaw, circular saw, drill) as outlined in the NCCER Performance Profile Sheet. Tasks are rated Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory by a certified NCCER evaluator.
  • Participation: Active engagement in discussions and hands-on activities.

Grading Policy

  • Written Exam: 50%
  • Performance Tasks: 40%
  • Participation/Attendance: 10%
  • Overall Passing Requirement: 70% average + Satisfactory on all performance tasks for module completion and NCCER credentialing.

NCCER Certification

Successful completion of this module (passing both written and performance components) earns trainees credit toward NCCER Carpentry Level 1 certification. Results are submitted to the NCCER National Registry for portable, industry-recognized credentials.
